John Moffat (1922-2012), accomplished British actor and comedian, at age 89. I saw him on stage as Judge Brack in that 1970 production of HEDDA GABLER oppostite Maggie Smith, as directed by Ingmar Bergman - in fact I went to it twice and also twice to that season's THE BEAU'S STRATEGM, Moffat excelled in restoration comedy and also played Poirot on radio, and also played in several Noel Coward revues in a long, varied career which included pantomime, Victorian music hall and serious drama.
Joe South (1940-2012) was a member of that generation of U.S. southern white boys who grew up listening to rhythm and blues, has died aged 72. He won a Grammy for his million-seller "Games People Play" one of the successful protest songs of the late '60s, just one of the many successful songs he wrote, others being "Walk A Mile in My Shoes"(also covered by Elvis), "Down in the Boondocks" and "I Never Promised You A Rose Garden".
A native of Atlanta, Georgia, he was a fine guitarist and became a popular session man at Muscle Shoals, Alabama, where the likes of Aretha Franklin did their best recordings. How we loved that sound back in the late '60s and still now too .... South also played bass on Dylan's album "Blonde on Blonde", and on Aretha's hits like "Chain of Fools", as well as Tommy Roe's early '60s hit "Sheila".
His sound fits into that Eagles, Randy Meisner, Clarence Clearwater, J.D. Souther deep sound that was just so popular then. RIP indeed.
